ABOUT THE PROJECT

Moving Community invite community members to join us in our workshop and performance-jam sessions in the project “It Starts With Us”, a project linked with Climate Change Theatre Action 2019 (CCTA2019).

CCTA, a global initiative run biennially, is a project that uses theatre and performance to bring communities together in creative responses to climate challenges.

We have selected three 5-minute plays from a collection of 50 short climate change plays commissioned specifically for CCTA by internationally recognised playwrights. These plays will form the bases for our sessions.

We are looking for individuals who are open to exploring creative ideas, participating and engaging in performance art conversations. We will adjust the workshops to the individuals’ movement capacities, play games, improvise and set a structure for the outdoor performance-jam that follows the workshops.

MISSION FOR THIS PROJECT
These CCTA 2019 plays have been selected for their collaborative/physical theatre and ensemble potential. Moving Community is committed to providing opportunities for participants to get involved in creative dance and theatre projects that help us strengthen our connection with Taranaki, affirm our community, and our place as active citizens of this community.

We know that the impact of climate inaction will exacerbate inequality and suffering in Aotearoa New Zealand communities. As performance artists we see our contribution to CCTA 2019 as an opportunity for us to explore democratic action involving ordinary people whose voices are sometimes absent from contexts "limited to experts and elected leaders" (Hayward, 2017).

This project is supported by New Plymouth District Council Creative Communities, stellaris dance nz and Word Spark Applied Theatre.
